Wisdom Rising: Exploring the Path of Parenting as We Age with Heidi Bourne and Samantha Akers

As parents of any age, we know the depth and breadth of our commitment and our love for our kids. As our kids age, move into their own lives, perhaps have their own children, what is our role? How do we define our relationship as parents of grown kids?  As we age, what do we need, what do they need? How do we help create and support the relationship with healthy boundaries?

Join me and Heidi Bourne for this beautiful in-depth exploration of parenting through the lens of the Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha. We’ll especially work with the teachings on Wisdom, Ethics and the Heart. Each 2-hour session will include guided and silent meditation, a talk and group discussion.

Everyone is welcome – both new and experienced practitioners.

Group Max: 10

Taking Refuge in the Brahmaviharas, the Wisdom of the Heart with Samantha

Taking Refuge in the Brahmaviharas, the Wisdom of the Heart with Samantha

Join Sam for a sweet meditation series and discussion group, through the lens of the Brahmaviharas, the wisdom practices of the heart. Each week, we will gather in a small group, for practice and for discussion and sharing of our experiences with practice.

The series will begin with Metta, Loving Kindness and continue on with Karuna (Compassion), Mudita (Sympathetic Joy), Uppekha (Equanimity) and we will add a 5th class on Forgiveness practices.

It is wise and sweet to take refuge in the Sangha as well. Coming together for practice gives birth to courage and resiliency. The Buddha taught that we all need “good Dharma friends” to help us on this path towards freedom. There is nothing quite a special as coming together for practice and discussion as a support for our hearts and humanness. We learn that we are not so different, that we truly are in this human experience together. This brings a sense of deep support and is forward leading in the practices.

Time together will consist of two sitting periods and discussion time.

This series is limited to 10 spots. Please register early. We will meet at Samantha’s home for classes.

$100 for the series.

June Silent Metta Meditation Retreat: Wisdom of the Compassionate Heart 2020

  • Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join Sam and guest teacher, Heidi Bourne, for a summer dive into the heart practices, the Divine Abodes, as taught by the Buddha. Held at Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary, in Garberville, Ca, where we will practice in silence and be held by the beauty of the Redwoods. Guest Yoga teacher, TBA.

This is a 5 day, 4 night retreat with food and lodging being included in the price for retreat. We will practice meditation, walking and yoga, in noble silence, with an optional 45 minute talking period, following dinner, each evening. Noble silence allows us to truly turn inward, without the many distractions of the busy world that we live in. Why incline toward the heart? The wisdom of the heart holds space for those difficult times, when we begin to witness the deeper and deeper truths of our experience, through meditation. The heart/mind (citta) helps us to stay, to just sit right down and invite all experiences to be present, with equanimity. Compassion (Karuna) and Forgiveness practices, offer support with different flavors of love. The practice of loving kindness points us towards deeper compassion, understanding and freedom from suffering. The boundless heart can hold and heal all things!

Retreat will include:

  • Daily heart practice meditations while sitting, walking and practicing yoga. ( Yoga will be accessible for ALL yogis)

  • Daily schedule of practice will be in 30 minute increments, with the option to sit longer periods, at any time.

  • Dhamma talks
